The Last Bake Sale: The Fight for Fair School Funding

Why do some schools thrive while others struggle just to get by?

At a time when public education is under attack, teachers are being laid off, and funding crises are hitting communities hard, The Last Bake Sale dives into one of the biggest questions in education today: Why is school funding in America so unequal?

Drawing from his decades-long fight as the lead attorney in one of the nation’s landmark school funding cases, Claremont (NH) v. Governor, Andru Volinsky tells this story like no one else can. After explaining how federal law developed to get us here, Andru uses New Hampshire—a state where the poorest communities pay the highest school taxes yet raise the least money—as a lens, Volinsky exposes the harsh realities of an unjust system that prioritizes privilege over fairness.

But this isn’t just a story about what’s wrong. It’s a roadmap for how we can make things better. From courtrooms to community action to political office, Volinsky shows how litigation, public engagement, and direct political involvement can drive real change in education policy and beyond.

Change can happen. The Last Bake Sale is proof—and an urgent call to action for anyone who believes in fair access to education for every child, no matter where they live.

“Volinsky has fashioned a real-life legal thriller, the insider story of a grassroots movement to try to force a state to honor its obligation to provide a quality education for its students. The compelling story of New Hampshire’s landmark decision is full of lessons for supporters of public education across the nation.”

About the Author

Andru Volinsky is a lawyer, educator, and now a first-time author, with his debut book, The Last Bake Sale: The Fight for Fair School Funding, arriving in April 2025. A lifelong advocate for fairness and equity, Andru spent two decades as the lead attorney in New Hampshire’s Claremont School Funding case, fighting to ensure every child has access to a quality education.

Andru has worn many hats over the years: elected New Hampshire Executive Councilor, 2020 candidate for governor, Bernie Sanders’ legal counsel during his 2016 New Hampshire presidential primary campaign, public defender, death penalty opponent, and lawyer in private practice. These days, he’s “flunking retirement” by teaching a public policy course, practicing law part-time, and writing about the issues he’s spent his life championing.

A progressive at heart, Andru believes real change starts with local action. He lives in East Concord, New Hampshire, with his wife, Amy, and when he’s not working, you’ll find him thinking up his next project—because sitting still isn’t really his thing.
